1975 Cornell Maritime Press hardcover book with 190 pages plus advertisements. Written at a time when old saddlemakers were slipping into the limbo of forgotten things and mechanization was overtaking specialized handcrafted products and associated trade secrets, the authors directed their attention to the outstanding members of the saddlemaking profession to preserve the history of first-class saddlemaking. They turned to the American West, as it is doubtful if any region of comparable size ever displayed so extensive a body of first-class saddlemakers as did this region during the era of open-range ranching. This book includes historical photographs as well as drawings and "is dedicated to the memory of all those skilled and conscientious old-time saddlemakers, sung and unsung, who devoted their talents to improving the lot of the western horseman."
