Author/artist Cornelius C. Smith, Jr. is a retired colonel of the United States Marine Corps and was officer of the day at the Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  He has published several books on southwestern history and he paints, sculpts, and executes woodcarvings.  His work is in numerous museums and private collections.  This work has no theme, but represents a collection of sketches dealing with diverse items such as animals, places, Indians, ruins, soldiers, historic incidents and the like.  Many of the subjects are tied to the American Southwest.  The poems were written in different places, at different times, spanning, perhaps, a quarter of a century.  More than any other of his works, this gives the reader a very personal glimpse of the author.  American Art; Southwest Art; Poetry
