University of Oklahoma Press soft cover book with 258 pages. Edward Everret Dale was the son of a frontiersman who dug California gold during the gold rush. His first work was as a cowboy, and he lived to see the transition from the cattle trail to the superhighway in the West. His story is about the West of the cowboy and cattleman between the end of the Civil War and the fencing of the free range in the late 1880's. Dale adds humorous anecdotes to his historical writing and writes a delicious and meaty blend of knowledge with the easy intimacy of the subject acquired through life experiences.
