It's Summer (Again) and It's Raining Cats and Dogs

7/6/2017

Unbelievable!  A year has passed since the Lizard's last blog entry, and it's summer in the desert again.  It's early July and we've already had many, many days of 105 degree (or higher) temperatures.  We are eagerly awaiting our summer rains to add to the less than one half inch of rain so far accumulated for 2017.  While we await life-giving summer rain, another life form is on the rise.  Animal shelters throughout southeastern Arizona (and, likely the rest of the US, too) are filling with homeless pets.

This summer might be a good time to open your home and heart to a new forever-friend.  To help potential pet parents make the adoption decision, here's a link to The Ultimate Guide to Pet Adoption recommended reading by volunteers at our local Green Valley Animal League.

Our furry family sends warm summertime greetings!

But it's a dry heat!

And, summer arrives with a hot-as-a-chili-pepper bang!  Triple digit temperatures (115 Fahrenheit) and single digit humidity (4%) ushered in our summer this 2016.  May our summer rains not be far behind.   Stay cool.

First Charity Auction of 2014 Supports Homeless Pets

1/20/2014

On eBay this Sunday after 304 pages views and 52 bids, my first edition copy of Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger resulted in a $248.50 donation to the Green Valley Animal League in Southern Arizona.  Howling good, yes it was!

The mission of The Animal League of Green Valley is to find forever homes for companion animals whose owners can no longer care for them because of illness or death, as well as unwanted and abandoned pets to the extent their resources and space permit. They are a 100% volunteer organization serving Green Valley, Sahuarita, and surrounding areas in southern Arizona. Their support comes from donations and sales of our thrift shop. They receive no support from public agencies.

Just Completed a Kiva.org Loan Supporting Poultry Production in El Salvador--Lost Lizard Got More Chickens!

Meet Manuel. He is benefiting from Kiva.org which helps to fund entrepreneurs throughout the world through private micro funding.   Lost Lizard just added sufficient funds to cover two thirds of Manuel's requested loan and bring it to a completely funded level.  The funds were the result of repayments of previous Kiva loans Lost Lizard made to several people throughout the world.  This is Lost Lizard's 17th loan.

From the Kiva site:  "45 year old Manuel is a responsible and enterprising person. He lives in his own home with his mother. For some years, he has worked raising and fattening chickens which he then sells at different markets that are near to his residence. With this, he is able to cover some of the household expenses. Manuel is requesting a loan to buy supplies for his business such as concentrate, vitamins, etc for his chickens. With this he hopes to increase his profits and offer his family a better quality of life."

The loan process is mutually beneficial.  Manuel will benefit and Lost Lizard gets to raise her chickens vicariously (and doesn't have to clean the coop).  This gets her in touch with fond memories of childhood days.  Kiva.org is a great organization and loans are small enough--often only $25--for anyone to participate.

Lost Lizard Supports the Families of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots

Along with many other private and businesses in Arizona and throughout the nation, Lost Lizard Trading Company is supporting the families of the 19 Granite Mountain Hot Shots, an elite group of fire fighters, who lost their lives in the line of duty while fighting a wild fire in Arizona on June 30, 2013.  A significant portion of the sale of a large 48 by 51 inch pictorial lifestyle rug by Sarah Tso was donated to the Prescott Firefighters’ Charities which is providing support to the surviving families.  This rug is unique in that it is an exemplar for this rug type in Don Dedera's book, Navajo Rugs: The Essential Guide.  Bidding ended July 22 with nearly 100 views, a dozen or more watchers and a $324 contribution to the Prescott Firefighters' Charities to directly support the families.

Sophie's Choice--Supporting The Animal League of Green Valley

Our rescued rat terrier, Princess Sophia AKA Sophie, as well as her furry friends at the Lizard's home rock, heartily recommend supporting The Animal League of Green Valley.  So we do so through purchases at The Attic Thrift Shop as a source of Lost Lizard inventory and through eBay Giving Works sales of books and other items.  Sophie says that TALGV gave her a chance to turn her life around--believe me, she is quite a rascal.

For 29 years, TALGV has been provtalgv.org/iding shelter and care for cats and dogs in need in the Green Valley area, a long valley now marked by an interstate from Tucson to Nogales on the US - Mexico border.  TALGV's mission is "A Home for Every Pet".  TALGV is an award-winning non-profit staffed with over 400 volunteers contributing nearly 100,000 service hours a year.  Sophie and I believe that the most amazing feature of the Animal League is the hands-on time provided to the animals by the volunteers.  Pets are gently handled, exercised and even massaged to help calm and socialize them.  Sophie says she thought it was a doggie spa during her time at the shelter.  More information is available by clicking on Sophie's image or visiting at The Animal League of Green Valley.

Lost Lizard and Dylan's Warriors Team Up to Fight Childhood Cancer!

PictureDylan ~ Forever 5 ~ Fighting Childhood Cancer!

Lost Lizard dedicates all profits from this Lost Lizard Books and More website to "Dylan's Warriors" a webpage set up on the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital website in memory of our grandson Dylan.  This effort helps to support research against a rare and deadly form of cancer most often found in young children.  Our goal is to eventually contribute $50,000 through various means.  A few folks ask what we mean by "all profits".  "All" probably means more than all as the only costs subtracted are cost of item and shipping; we don't try to factor in overhead and all the other pesky costs of running a business (we do in the larger accounting, but not for Dylan).  For 2012, Lost Lizard contributed nearly $800.  Yes, that's not much, but every purchase made on the Lost Lizard Books and More website helps to reach our goal.  Direct contributions to Dylan's Warriors via the Lucile Packard website are also welcomed and will receive IRS approved donation receipts.

Proceeds from Navajo Chief's Blanket Auction Benefit American Indian College Fund!

It's been a while since we've reported significant charitable contributions.  We give back a lot, but often do not take the time to comment on the blog.  It's also been a while since we've given to the American Indian College Fund which provides scholarships to students attending American Indian tribal colleges.

So. . .Lost Lizard just finished an eBay auction for a beautiful 77" by 50" Navajo "Chiefs Blanket" in stunning reds, whites and blues.  Thought it would be a timely 4th of July special.  The weaving was created by master Navajo weaver Bessie Tsosie.  After 181 views, 20-some watchers, the blanket sold for $761.51 (a veritable steal for this rug).  100% of the proceeds have been dedicated to AICF through eBay/PayPal's Giving Works.  If you would like more information about AICF or to donate on their website, here is a link http://www.collegefund.org/

In late October, Lost Lizard Trading Company was able to make a significant contribution to the American Indian College Fund resulting from the sale of an outstanding piece of early Ben Nighthorse Campbell handcrafted work.  The piece is a concho belt entitled "Morningstar" and was signed and dated by Ben Nighthorse.  It is made of silver, turquoise, antler and other natural materials.  It includes a large rectangular buckle and 6 conchos, each concho measuring about 4 inches long by 3 inches high. Made during the early 1970's, this piece was early in the career of Ben Nighthorse Campbell.  Campbell continues to be a well-known artist and also former United States Senator.

Just in time for Christmas 2010 Lost Lizard Trading Company offered a beautiful limited edition Kusi Horse Pendleton Blanket Robe on eBay.  100% of the auction sale was designated for the American Indian College Fund.  During the 7-day auction, there were 238 views and 22 bids with a final sales price of $178.61 (still a bargain for this blanket!).  Lost Lizard publishes its charitable auctions through Twitter. All proceeds will be managed by Mission Fish and paid directly to the American Indian College Fund.  Lost Lizard believes there is nothing so important as an investment in our future through our children.  Education is such an investment.  Lost Lizard hopes to be able to continue offering speical items to support its favorite charitable organizations and hopes that you will be able to participate in one of these auctions.
